FAQs

How can I get involved?

Our next application cycle will be this February- March 2024. The application link can be found in our “Apply Now” section. Please email vo45@cornell.edu if you have any questions.

Do I need any legal experience to be a volunteer?

No. The work we do is about building relationships with incarcerated men and women, and ultimately constructing a comprehensive and compelling parole packet for them. In order to do this, you must be an adept writer, an active listener, and someone with excellent communication skills. You will need the perseverance required to collect various documents as well as interpersonal skills that allow you to form relationships with the friends and family of the incarcerated applicant. Finally, you have to be comfortable working with someone who has been sentenced to life in prison.

What is the commitment?

The commitment is 1-3 hours a week for nine months, although it is much less at the beginning and much more at the end (5-10 hours), closer to the parole hearing.

Can I apply if I am a senior?

Yes. Keep in mind you will be working with an applicant for nine months after being accepted into the program, therefore, you may be working with CUPIC after your graduation. If you are comfortable with that commitment you may apply.

Is there travel?

Volunteers are expected to go to the prison to visit the applicant they are working with, to the extent that it is possible. We work with applicants all over NYS, so this distance can be far. We typically travel by car, with arrangements available if your team does not have access to a vehicle. Our project reimburses all travel costs related to the project.

Can you participate in CUPIC and do the Cornell Prison Education TA Initiative?

No. Students may do this volunteer work or serve as a TA, but not both. Given the nature of our work and the confidentiality required in both programs, you must decide which program you would like to do. Both will count towards the CPEJ requirement.
